A Conspiracy Of Silence: Does Daycare Harm Kids?

Posted By: First Lady on 8/18/2000  in PARENTING
Should children be raised by there parents -- or by "experts" who know what they're doing? Anna Freud, the daughter of Sigmund Freud, was a child analyst who thought that well-trained professionals could do a much better job of rearing children than their parents. During World War II, she got a chance to prove it -- and discovered just how wrong she was. In the 1940's, London was full of children left homeless by the German Blitz. Anna Freud opened the Hampstead Nurseries to care for these children. Only the best-qualified people were allowed to work there. The nurseries were run according to the latest theories in child phychology. The result? As Brian Robertson writes in his book, 'There's No Place Like Work', "In these controlled conditions -- about as favorable as could be imagined -- the children fared far worse ...than those raised in average families." The children lagged behind on speech skills, were more aggressive, and less cooperative than their counterparts raised within a family setting. According to Robertson, Freud considered the nurseries "definitive proof that there was no adequate substitute for maternal care." This article is from CNSNews.com (5/15/2000)

"Researchers conducting the largest long-term study of child care in the United States said today that they had found that children who spend most of their time in child care are three times as likely to exhibit behavioral problems in kindergarten as those who are cared for primarily by their mothers. The study, whose detailed results have not been published, found a direct correlation between time spent in child care and traits like aggression, defiance and disobedience. In interviews today, two of its lead researchers said the findings held true regardless of the type or quality of care, the sex of the child, the family's socioeconomic status or whether mothers themselves provided sensitive care." Kid Care, Behavior Linked In Study
 Posted By: Prince on  4/20/2001
"The more hours that toddlers spend in child care, the more likely they are to turn out aggressive, disobedient and defiant by the time they are in kindergarten, according to the largest and most authoritative study of child care and development ever conducted.

Researchers said Wednesday that this correlation held true regardless of whether the children came from rich or poor homes, were looked after by a relative, a nanny or at a center, and whether they were girls or boys." (Shankar Vedantam/Washington Post 4/19/01) This is but another example of how our government attempts to solve one problem (generating more TAX revenue through the two-family income) yet creates countless problems as a result.

Work and Family: How Government Drives Parents and Values out of the Home

I found your post interesting and informative. It reminded me of a speech that former Vice President Dan Quayle gave last year to the American Enterprise Institute (6/28/99). The title sums it all up. We wonder why these kids are shooting their fellow students. All to often the government's response is directed at a symptom and not the cause.
